Looking Forward

Jennifer has contributed a chapter to the Municipal Planning Handbook, to be out in early 2010, published by Municipal World and edited by Greg Baeker of AuthentiCity.

"A key connection I seek to illuminate is the relationship between land use patterns and the cultural richness - or lack thereof - that results. Cultural planning is about more than theatres, museums and galleries (although importantly it is about that too); it is about embracing culture as a lens through which to view all of our municipal planning decisions, recognizing that the places we create reflect our values as a society. For example, "traditional" infrastructure investments (like sidewalks, roads and bridges), have an impact on the cultural vibrancy that characterizes our Cities, and as such these investments need to be understood as contributing to a society's cultural infrastructure. The allocation of resources within our public right-of-ways is a key determinant to whether a city can be experienced on foot, for example."
