MMM Group, in association with Office For Urbanism, Via Architecture, CN Watson & Associates, Barry Lyon & Associates, the Jacobs Consultancy, Cumming & Co, and LEA Consulting Limited have been retained to conduct a comprehensive higher-order transit, land use and urban design Feasibility/Master Plan study for the Hurontario/Main Street corridor.
Hurontario/Main Street is a key north-south transit corridor linking the downtowns of Mississauga and Brampton and provides access to other strategic inter-regional transit systems. This project offers the potential for a crucial piece of new infrastructure that would mark the beginning of a transition from sprawling car-dominated environments to modern multi-modal cities.
The study has 5 key objectives: (i) to examine if rapid transit is feasible along Hurontario/Main Street between Port Credit and the Brampton GO Station in downtown Brampton; (ii) to develop appropriate land use and urban design policies and initiatives that could support rapid transit service; (iii) to identify potential social, economic, and environmental impacts of various rapid transit routes and technologies; (iv) to undertake the study to comply with Phase 1 and 2 of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Process for Master Plans; and, (v) to ensure that residents and key stakeholders play an active role in shaping the future of the Hurontario Street/Main Street Corridor.
As part of this Study, Office For Urbanism is undertaking an urban design analysis that will incorporate all aspects required for the integration of built form and transportation strategies, as well as aspects which form part of the greater vision. Stemming from this analysis, Office For Urbanism will develop a Conceptual Character Plan of different Character Areas along the Hurontario corridor by working with the community. A concept and vision will be developed at the level of individual character areas, responding to the unique condition and character of each. An Urban Design Framework and guidelines for each character area will follow.
