Office For Urbanism, in association with a landscape firm, Laird & Associates, created the design for the central civic square of the City of Iqaluit. This is the first public space of significance since Iqaluit became the capital of Nunavut, Canada’s newest Territory. Iqaluit Square is located adjacent to the Eldersà Centre and will function as the principal civic space for community events, ceremonies and celebrations.
The design of the square draws from traditional construction methods and local materials to generate a sense of space that is at once contemporary, and rooted in Inuit heritage. Drifting snow and ice were also an inherent component in the design of this arctic landscape.
The design of Iqaluit Square functioned as a detailed and precedent setting demonstration project, following our work on the Downtown and Capital District Redevelopment Plans.
