OfficeforUrbanism participated in an international team headed by Rojkind Arquitectos (Mexico) for the development of an urban and architectural design concept for The Ajman Free Zone Marina Development in Dubai. The challenge consisted in transforming a derelict portland into a mixed-use, high-density waterfront development. The area, due to its strategic location at the entrance of the Arabian Gulf, and the natural and man-created conditions that shape it (e.g. energy resources, land use policy, corporate benefits), is recognised as an exceptional location for a regenerated urban environment introducing new uses, as well as a logical bridging point between the eastern and western sides of the city. The objective of The Ajman Free Zone Authority is to attract not only residents and workers but also tourists.
OU participation included the analysis of the existing site and context, providing an urban design and planning concept, as well as the integration of architectural designs with the areas Master Plan. OU also lead the creation of design principles and guidelines, and the consolidation of the public realm.
