Office for Urbanism hosted a two-day on-site workshop to introduce a delegation from the City of Regina to Portland's key concepts, policies, players, and outcomes, as well as to inspire thinking about what might be possible in the Regina context. OU led the delegation in walking tours, exploring at a more detailed level specific development areas, and engaged a conversation with key individuals involved in making Portland a model City of sustainability. This created an opportunity for political leaders and city staff from both cities to benefit from each other's experience, challenges, and opportunities, in a direct, hands-on way.
The City of Regina's Vision statement, as prepared by OU in the Regina Downtown Neighbourhood Plan, has set out clear goals about community and sustainability. Although the City of Portland is larger, has a rolling topography, and operates in a different regulatory context, it has grappled with the same questions that Regina has been seeking to unravel. Portland has invested significant planning, resources, and political will into becoming a globally recognized leader in sustainable development. Today, Portland continues to push the envelope with new planning initiatives, including energy co-generation, green architecture, emphasis on a cycling culture, and mixed income housing.
