The Regina Best Practices event was an energized two-day capacity building conference organized by Office for Urbanism for the City of Regina. It was held on September 22 and 23, 2009 at the historic Hotel Saskatchewan. The purpose of the event was to provide an opportunity for the Mayor, Council, and City Staff to learn from experts about pioneering best practices in city building across Canada and the US, in anticipation of the upcoming Official Community Plan review process. It was also designed to create a platform for elevated dialogue between City departments in generating bold city building initiatives for Regina. Eight speakers were invited to speak on four major topics - The Complete Street (on benefits and emerging models on complete streets), True Stories of Development Success (on developers contributions to great cities), Case Studies of Downtown (on the Downtown Plans of Moncton, NB and Lethbridge, AB), and Urban Development Patterns (on thinking regionally about city building).
As it was a rare opportunity to gather such a unique assembly of experts into one event, it was crucial to ensure that the event was inspirational and informative for both participants and guest speakers. To do so, various methods of interaction were integrated into the event including a Mayor's Reception, speaker presentations, panel discussions, and roundtable discussions. Participants were also asked to record 'Transformative Revelations' on cards and submit them anonymously throughout the day, as a way to host a silent dialogue on what the participants learned. To maintain the momentum beyond the event, the Transformative Revelations were consolidated into an easy-access 'desktop booklet' for participants, full of key 'Transformative Revelations' and images from both days.
