Haldimand County Streetscape Plans and Urban Design Guidelines

Office for Urbanism was retained by Haldimand County to undertake a streetscape planning and design study to revitalize five Downtown communities within the County - Caledonia, Dunnville, Jarvis, Cayuga, and Hagersville. Specifically, the Haldimand County Streetscape Plans and Urban Design Guidelines was purposed to be a short-term plan and implementation strategy to guide an initial $200,000 investment into streetscape improvements for the Community Improvement Plan Areas of each community, starting with Caledonia and Dunnville, the two largest urban areas within the County and the main focus of this study.

The study was facilitated through a three phased public consultation process involving open houses, interactive panels, and presentations, to vet recommendations as they were generated. Understanding that a streetscape plan and urban design guidelines are just one component of a successful Downtown revitalization strategy, a Regional Vision, Principles, and Big Moves were generated that identified the key implementation frameworks necessary for downtown revitalization to happen. The study includes community Visions and Big Moves for all five communities, Streetscape Plans and Urban Design Guidelines for Caledonia and Dunnville (with associated photomontages and street sections to illustrate the application of the Guidelines), and an Implementation Strategy that identifies specific actions, timing for implementation, and an estimated costing for each action. The Plan is to be implemented between 2009 and 2010.
